About this tool

LTL (less-than-truckload) shipments price by NMFC freight class — a number from 50 (densest, cheapest) to 500 (lightest, most expensive). Enter your shipment's length × width × height and weight; the calculator computes density (lb/ft³), the corresponding freight class, and shows the NMFC class table so you can verify. Forklifts typically ship class 70-85. Pallet jacks class 60-70. Lift tables class 85-100. Getting the class right keeps you out of trouble — shippers who declare the wrong class get reclassified by the carrier at audit, with retroactive surcharges.

Frequently asked questions

Why does density matter?
LTL pricing is fundamentally about how much trailer space a shipment takes up per pound of revenue. A 1,000 lb shipment at 40 lb/ft³ (class 65) occupies 25 ft³; the same 1,000 lb at 5 lb/ft³ (class 200) occupies 200 ft³ — 8× more trailer space, 8× more cost per pound.
What's the NMFC?
National Motor Freight Classification — a commodity catalog maintained by the NMFTA (National Motor Freight Traffic Association). Each commodity has an NMFC item number (e.g., 16880 for forklifts) and a class. Some commodities have density-based classes (class determined by density); others are fixed-class regardless of density.
What if my class is wrong?
Carriers re-weigh and re-measure random shipments at their terminals. If your declared class is wrong, they reclassify and rebill — usually 2-3× the original rate. This is called a "reclass" charge and it's a common pain point for shippers.
How do I avoid reclasses?
Measure the entire pallet (including overhang), weigh it, calculate density honestly, use the correct NMFC item number. Our calculator gives you the density-based class; for fixed-class items (hazmat, agricultural commodities, specific named articles), look up the NMFC item directly.
Does freight class affect liftgate and residential fees?
No. Freight class is just the base line-haul rate. Liftgate ($95-$165), residential delivery ($85-$120), limited access ($115+), and inside delivery ($225+) are accessorial fees added on top, regardless of class.
