About this tool

Aisle width determines how much cube you get from a given warehouse. A standard wide-aisle forklift needs 12-14 ft (144-168") between racks. A narrow-aisle reach truck cuts that to 8-10 ft (96-120"). A very-narrow-aisle (VNA) swing-reach truck goes down to 5.5-6 ft (66-72") — but only on a guide-rail or wire-guided aisle. Enter your pallet length, truck turning radius, and load overhang; the calculator returns minimum aisle width for 90-degree stack entry, recommended aisle width with 6" safety clearance, and the cube-per-square-foot gain vs. a wide-aisle layout.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between wide, narrow, and VNA?
Wide-aisle (11-14 ft) accommodates counterbalance forklifts. Narrow-aisle (8-10 ft) accommodates reach trucks with pantograph forks. Very-narrow-aisle (5.5-6 ft) accommodates specialized VNA trucks with rotating or swing-reach attachments, typically on wire-guided rails.
How is minimum aisle width calculated?
It's the truck's outside turning radius, plus the pallet length (loaded forward), plus a 6-inch safety clearance. For a standard 5,000 lb counterbalance truck with an 80" turning radius and a 48" pallet, minimum aisle = 80 + 48 + 6 = 134".
Why add 6 inches?
OSHA and ANSI B56.1 require safe operating clearance. Drivers can't turn inside the absolute minimum without clipping rack uprights — 6 inches gives the operator a margin and keeps insurance and OSHA inspectors satisfied.
Can I use a counterbalance forklift in narrow aisles?
Only if you size for it. Some compact 3-wheel electric counterbalances turn in 72" — narrow aisle territory. But most 4-wheel 5K lb trucks need 12+ ft. Verify turning radius on the data plate before committing to an aisle layout.
What's the cube gain from VNA?
Typically 40-50% more pallet positions in the same footprint vs. wide aisle. But VNA trucks cost 2-3× more, need dedicated drivers, and require guidance infrastructure (wire-guided or optical-guided). Break-even usually hits around 8,000+ pallet positions.
